The Manoel Island Foundation, is a non-profit foundation set up to act as guardian of the rights and obligations agreed to between MIDI plc and the Gzira Local Council as set out in a Guardianship Deed.
The Guardianship Deed was entered into between The Manoel Island Foundation, the Gzira Local Council and MIDI plc. Through the Deed MIDI plc has committed to bind itself in the provision of certain commitments governing the Manoel Island Public Park, the Foreshore, the Swimming Zones, Fort Manoel and Building Heights on Manoel Island.

In 1570, the island was acquired by the Cathedral Chapter of Mdina and it became the property of the Bishop of Malta. It was called l'Isola del Vescovo or il-Gżira tal-Isqof in Maltese (the Bishop's Island).
Built in the 18th Century by Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena Fort Manoel is the star attraction of Manoel Island and is frequented by many local and foreign visitors.
